The maternal side of my family held the first Hipolito Family Reunion earlier this month. Organized primarily by my Tita, Anita Hipolito Sia Andaya and the Northern Californian family members, members of our family descended on the Bay Area from far and wide for days (or a week) of fun and reconnecting over food, drink, music,  exploration, and prayer of the San Francisco Bay Area. These pictures are excerpts from the set (of about 150 photographs?) I took at the actual celebration held in South San Francisco. A few more selections from the set can be seen HERE.

Last minute shoot at the Caltrain Station near the Embarcadero. Big ups to Livia for linking up with Jared and I for a last minute shoot!

And so the big day finally came. It was a blast getting to know the family, the entourage, and the organizers. The event itself was quite possibly the most elegant and extravagent Cotillion that I’ve ever been to, which made covering the event a particular challenge. But ups to the Ramos family for giving us at Lights Out Photography a shot, we definitely hope you like the flicks we dropped off to the house tonight! Special Shout out to Gerline and all of you in the Entrouage. You homies step the Pusoy Dos/Dueces game up! Ryan, see you at your birthday bash next week!

Story of my life.

Representing what is tentatively known as Traeceratops Photography. So I got kinda bored with myself during the shoot and we decided some roles needed to be switched up. At certain points of the day of shooting with Tracey, we thought maybe I should model, and she should shoot. From what I’m understanding, this was her first time with a DSLR. Pretty damn good, huh? It turned into a collaborative effort eventually as I provided the edits. Check out the rest of her set on my flickr.

I woke up to the Roots’ “Rising Down” album the the other day, which promptly triggered me to hop on Youtube to watch some Rik Cordero videos. I definitely love his use of light and how he directs each of his films/music videos, and was inspired to play with my own style of photography and just had to call Tracey to shoot. So definitely much love to her for accommodating a last minute photo run, and getting ready (even with the hair!) in record time.

So after a semester of saying we’d do it, we finally got together and made a photoshoot happen! While everything that could have gone wrong (primarily weather, and the absence of a “really could have used that” 35 mm prime lens that was stolen along with my car a few months ago) went wrong, things finally fell into place. Although we did do three sets, the set done in the backyard, by far, yeilded the best photographs, particularly in the sense that they seem to suit their music the best. The other set was experimenting with lighting, which probably will not see the light of day (sorry y’all!), as well as a rooftop shoot which can be seen on my flickr, along with the other shots from this set.

Other than that, shout outs to Geraldine Punzalan, Tracey Felix, and Janella Valdez! Couldn’t of made this happen without you guys.

So it was a fun day, not only did we do a shoot with MissCarolineXOXO on Tracey’s roof, but later in the day we also did a shoot for Dane inside the house. There were plenty of interesting shots as he went through some of his routines right there in the dining room. It was also super fun to see some of Dane’s material as the tricks he does just might really blow your mind away. That said, if y’all are looking for a magician at your event, hit me up and I can definitely connect you with him. Same goes for MissCarolineXOXO.

Also known as April Bacsafra, she’s a good friend of mine that I met during my time at San Francisco State University and working with the Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor. I remember there were times where we would just chill at her apartment with her roomies and just share drink and conversation. Definitely some fond memories there. This shoot wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for Tracey Felix, who offered her home (yeah, we’re on the roof of her crib), It’s It ice cream, and her hair styling assistance. Big ups to Dane and April for hooking it up with pizza too. I hope you all enjoy the images! I had a blast during this shoot.

It’s always great to work with new people, and working with Tracey continues to be an absolute pleasure. Managing to handle her own make up and her own hair, she seemed pretty comfortable in front of the camera. She’s incredible humble too, everytime I try and praise or thank her, all she’ll do is tell me to shut up, and that “it was all you [as in me, Jeremy]” — which isn’t true.

Gotta love her.

Jared introduced me to these rolls at the Kamameshi House, a local sushi spot our families grew up having in the neighborhood. It will probably raise eyebrows when you eat it around your friends, but it’s really good, I promise.

In the past few weeks, you’ll find folks standing outside of Burk Hall from Dawn’s Hip Hop Studies class (formerly run by Dr Akom and Dr Ginwright), and from Malcolm’s Photographic Exploration of Asian Americans. It’s usually two respective circles,but creative in their own rite. While the folks from my class are often talking about cameras, photography, and other shenanigans, the group from the Hip Hop class are usually battling each other in a cipher (sometimes even accompanies by someone on the bongos.)

I don’t know if this is particularly what I had envisioned. My original idea entailed more people pouring out of the MUNI from a wider angle.

This was shot at New Montgomery Station. Couldn’t really find a place to plant my camera aside from this bench next to a utility closet. But I think it came out okay considering I only had 2 chances to do it before my M arrived.

I’ve decided I like MUNI better than BART. Less noise, smells less like urine, the inside looks cooler, and you spend less time underground, giving a really cool city perspective to those of us used to being stuck in the stop and go of the city’s streets and avenues..

Masterminded by Geraldine Punzalan, homies who participated in this year’s Filipino Graduation at San Francisco State (Sponsored by the Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor) decided to take their Grad Picture in their own hands and get them done themselves. The results were so good, that when the proofs were distributed, local printing places didn’t want to print them, as they figured the shots were copyrighted by companies such as Prestige.

Little Lightroom adjustments, only adjusted for image size, crop, and brightness (i realize the LCD setting i had on my camera was WAY too high, so I was compensating by underexposing without knowing). Experimented with a new CPL filter on the 35mm.

We shot Chris Ross at the Embarcadero in hopes of expanding his portfolio. We thought we’d expand ours as well. You may not believe it, but other than a brightness adjustment, there is very little photoshop involved in this picture.

Tinkered with a light set up one night. Had some odd results as I used a “cool” studio lamp in tandem with a few utility lights running on florescent bulbs. Needless to say the mix of temperatures forced me to beach some of the colors out. I like the set though.

Here’s an orchid my mom has in her kitchen. Not the most fond of flower photography, but oh, what the fuck.

Proud of these cats. Many of the folks in front or behind this banner were interns of mine at one point. Love to see that PACE continues to be strong. This was taken at the Veterans Day Parade. Our sign is in reference to the Filipinp WWII Vets who have yet to recieve promised equity from the United States.

Yup. For all the Haters?

I’ve been receiving some harsh words over a previous version of this post. I had the title saying “Mutha Fuckin Al Robles came to class today,” and a caption saying “Yup.” saying that to exemplify his OG status. I guess it’s a hip hop thing? (Similar to when an MC would scream “We got A mutha fuckin TRIBE CALLED QUEST in the house!!!) It made sense to me, especially seeing as how his book is named, Rappin with 10,000 Carabao in the Dark. I see him as the Filipino American equivalent to The Last Poets, who hail from the African American community and considered the forefathers of Rap. But I suppose folks misunderstood it and a degree of hate mail was sent over. I ended up taking it down to keep a can of worms from tangling more than it needed to, but the hate comments kept coming (see the post before this one for a taste of what I was recieving.)

To clarify, Al Robles commands a great deal of my respect and has served as a great inspiration to my art and writing as a Filipino American. I really don’t know where all this hostility is coming from. This is a blog that is meant to be a photography and design portfolio, ultimately showcasing things that I see in my everyday life that inspire me as an artist and organizer–Al Robles and “Hello Kitty Photography” included. It discourages me as an artist that unnecessary animosity will continue to limit and burden our already disenfranchised communities–especially when it comes so cowardly as to do it online, in a realm of anonymity. I don’t recall going to anyone else’s space to start anything foul. Although I do admire your protectiveness for one of our own, if you folks consider yourselves to be community advocates, I’d love to hear how the tactless defensive actions exemplify our skills in community advocacy and bridge-building.

Anyway, if the problem persists, for those of you seeing this photograph for the first time, please indicate to me, what it is about him standing in front of a blackboard getting ready to spit some poetry, comes off as particularly disrespectful. If it is the words you have qualms with, I apologize for the culture clash. In some of the circles I come out of in the Bay Area, we emphasize the importance of certain nouns with a bit of profanity. Though I understand this can be misleading, the F-word remains to be an ambiguous term in our language.

But that’s almost a digression. I’m just trying to share some of the intensity, as I’m sure not all of us will get the chance to see or meet Al Robles in person. Check out his book, or if you’re in the Bay, check out the ManilaTown Heritage Foundation out on Kearny Street in SF.

It’s finally cold. We were in Chinatown last night and came across these ornaments in the window of one of the shops out there. I wonder how they get them in the glass.

Taken at Hugo’s in Southern California. I somehow lost this in the shuffle somewhere along the line. I thought it was a pretty sweet portrait so I was glad to have found it when I did.

I tend to get a real kick out of black and white. Even when I’m shooting, I insist on shooting in b & w despite the understanding that initially shooting in color, and then desaturating the colors in post production allows me to keep my options open. Perhaps it’s because during the shooting process, I don’t even want to regard the colors. As if color was a distracting element, drawing attention away from what is at hand. Or maybe I just like what black and white does to form.

How are these things so romantic?

October is Pilipino American History Month. After being rained out for last year’s celebration, we were glad to see this year’s Pilipino American History Month Rally at San Francisco State come to fruition.

I did this in front of Geraldine (our model for this piece) while being bored and distracted in a kinesiology class. I’ve never done any pieces like this in the presence of the actual model, so it’s interesting to hear the feedback while the work is in progress. It almost becomes a collaborative effort.

I’m thinking people put up chain-link fences more so than walls. I guess it’s that fake sense of transparency. Chain link fences around buildings, around yards, around hearts. Whatever. I’m curious about what it does more–keep the right demons out, or keep the wrong demons in? I guess it’s better than glass, I suppose windows are deceiving too. God forbid it’s a glass ceiling.

Few days before go time.

Geraldine and I took a day trip out of the San Francisco Bay and found ourselves in Monterey, California. With our summer vacations coming to a close I must say the trip out was a near-perfect (the weather in Monterey tends to be overcast) outing. It was during this particular day that it became quite apparent that our relationship with each other has a strong foundation founded on our ability to have effortless conversation, strong understanding of each others emotions and intellect, sharing and exploring each others interests, while also enjoying the idea of getting through life with–and/or next to–each other. The support is uncanny, and I cherish the fact that I can truly call her my companion.

Oh, and yes, I’m still excited by the fact that the stuff I said about her in that one “Color Study” entry still holds true:

We continue to wonder why, and though, like I said, I’m not that fatalistic, I agree with the notion that perhaps it wasn’t the right time, and the events that would later glue our personalities together have had yet to occur. Nonetheless, I’m glad that time finally did come around, cuz though she’ll say she’s amazed with me, it’s actually the other way around. Finding folks who positively facilitate your growth can be hard to come by.

Makes me feel lucky. I can’t forget that.

little thoughts.

The summer is coming to an end, and school will be back in. This means work, coordinating, facilitating, studying, blood, sweat, tears, laughter, joy, whatever. In the end, we all live for this shit. Sometimes it seems like an overwhelming adventure, but it’s motivating and halfway inspiring to know that folks will continue to  be humble, yet carry themselves with a natural swagger, even though they understand that our generation stands on the shoulders of the past, but “they’re gonna have to take that weight.” As in nature, many are called, few are chosen. Good luck enCore, I’ll serve you the best i can.

I wish we could have done mo’better ones. But whatevs. When you left this past week I have come to realize that you give me a lot of faith in a lot of different things.

Sometimes I wonder if the desperation is inside, or outside of the machine.

If there’s anything I picked up in art school, it’s patience, honed skills, and learning how tedious color studies could be. However, though tedious, I always liked how color swatches looked when composed with the original photo(s), thus I began incorporating them into my designs. Though this looks like an unintentional GAP ad, these photographs were taken at this past weekend’s Gay Pride Parade. I was actually quite lucky to be there. I was supposed to be presiding over a meeting with fellow coordinators of the Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor, but due to scheduling conflicts we were unable to meet.

Instead, Geraldine hit me up and asked if I’d like to accompany her to the Parade before she had to go to work. It was good times, good conversation, and good company. Though Geraldine was a past Fall intern of mine, it was only since Spring Banquet that we’ve started talking (despite the fact we had class together all of Spring). We continue to wonder why, and though, like I said, I’m not that fatalistic, I agree with the notion that perhaps it wasn’t the right time, and the events that would later glue our personalities together have had yet to occur. Another Brother. Always up for conversation, he’s a pretty well balanced individual. Like all my close friends, another cat to ride or die for, despite bumps in the road we’ve had in the past. Talk to this cat about sports, politics, relationships, music–whatever. He’ll always be down to provide an opinion, or question the shit out of yours. Gotta love him.

Orange cats always seem to get themselves into some shit. Bailey is no exception. He has this thing where he likes to drop everything into his water bowl, pick it up with his paw, and stash it somewhere in the house. However, this is not the case for his favorite toys, which tend to be fake mice. There have been numerous occasions in which I will walk out into the dark hallway leading to the bathroom at night, and step on one of his wet stuffed toys. I used to think it was gross, but then I realized that during the Spring and Summer, one of our other cats, Maya, likes to go outside and hunt small rodents, birds, and snakes. She’ll then leave the carcass on our doorstep, as if she were saying “thank you” for the food our house provides her, attempting to repay her debts. Maybe Bailey’s trying to do the same thing.

What is it about the moon?

Here’s a flick from Aquatic Park in San Francisco. I just posted this because I thought it looked really cool. But on a quasi-spiritual tip, I always look at this photograph thinking it’s trying to tell me something, I just can’t figure it out yet. Perhaps it’s not time– then again, I’m not really that fatalistic.

Rocky stepped up to the camera as I experimented with a wide angle lens (10-22mm) he had rented–hence the fuzziness of the picture. Another brother of ours, he offered up his home so Andrew and I could chill. Two other friends, Hana and Geraldine, made it out that night too. We’ve all learned that we have an affinity for each other’s company and conversation, while garnishing our gatherings with pitchers of sangria. An interesting note is that though we share similar networks, we didn’t really meet each other until I played part in this joke that had him believing that he would be dying that night. It was quite vicious, but we’ve been good friends ever since. PS. If you get a chance, ask Rocky about the jobs he’s had, and how quickly he tends to climb the ladder in each of them. I dunno how he does it, but he has this way of saying “I just got promoted” in a very non-chalant way. While it makes me feel like a deadbeat, it’s also inspiring.

“You are who you associate with.” If there’s any truth to that quote, I am exceedingly proud to call Dru my brother, and truly honored that he’ll refer back to me in the same way. I find that the more I mature, there’s a definite emphasis in seeking the company of people who can positively facilitate growth. My problem is, I have a hard time thinking I ever wrong. But Dru never lets me slip, he will single-handedly destroy any half assed argument (aka excuses) I have, aggressively re-align my perception, and still be dope enough to have a drink and break bread with me at the end of the day. Respect, bro. I’ve learned a lot from you.

Uncle David has been living with us for some time now. The eldest of my mom’s siblings, he had to leave his family in the Philippines to work.  If you’re up late at night in the house, you’ll probably find him on the phone in the kitchen, speaking to his wife. There must definitely be a degree of loneliness. Now working as a cart ranger at the local Pak n’ Save (Safeway), one thing you can definitely tell about his character is his courage and dedication to his family. Unfortinately, due to a language barrier, there aren’t too many words shared between the two of us. However, you can definitely sense a strong mutual respect.

We go back til way back when. We’ve even survived a great many bumps in the road, sometimes together, sometimes on opposite sides, but this is one of them folks you ride or die for. We were touching base last week and decided on a impromptu photoshoot at the SSF BART station. If you get a chance, hop over onto my flickr page, there’s a copped picture focusing on her lips that I thought came out quite well.

She was standing by the stair when a door opened upstairs alerting her attention. This is quite possibly my favorite photograph of the past few weeks. Earlier on in our friendship I seemed to have this knack for capturing images of her in the most awkward of moments, but nowadays she seems to shine in front of the camera in a totally different way.

The goal here was to take a look into intimacy. Due to various social factors, perhaps a degree of eroticism in these kinds of shoots is unavoidable, but you be the judge of this one.

I finally got a Canon XT! It’s been a long time comin’, but I’m just really grateful I finally got my hands on one. Here’s Mary hanging out during rehersals. First favorite shot from this camera.

So the initial Pilipino Cultural Night idea totally grew into something of a much larger scale. ALL of our photography would be given the time warp treatment. Mike Juan was kind enough to let me borrow his 40D as my modest Canon S3 wasn’t enough this time around. I’m happy with the results. Check out www.flickr.com/jusflicks for the rest of them.

The idea was to make PCN’s promotional photography look vintage. I didn’t want to just jack photographs off of Google or Flickr and utilize them in this year’s PCN artwork. This is when we set out to create our own vintage photographs. Fun seeing what a little bit of costume prep and photoshop can do.

I can never seen enough of these two. Andrew, Krystle, and I decided to go on a stroll in San Francisco’s downtown area. If I remember right, this was just a week or two after the new year.

Stockton, California. Home to what is known as Little Manila, or “El Dorado,” as it was called back in the day. Now what is left are a mere 3 buildings and the alluring Daguhoy Lodge. Nonetheless, the exposure trip is definitely an eye opener, as well as a great source of pride. Fuck a gentrification though.

Japantown is a favorite shooting location. I loved how the smoke from Maureen’s cigarette gets gently pulled away by the wind. Totally didn’t intend for that, but definitely enjoying the results.

I tend to catch her at the most awkward moments. This is on a exposure trip of San Francisco’s South of Market (SOMA) district.

These cats got personality! This shoot was loads of fun. I guess I was trying to experiment with darker themes. But of course, it’s always fun to do simple fashion photography.

Mark’s always down to shoot too. He’s definitely comfortable in front of the camera. This time around we were bored and looking to kill time before we had to attend a meeting. We thought it’d be a good idea to scout for future photo-locations.

Rocky and I decided it would be dope to finally take our friends here. The resulting sets proved to be gratifying and rewarding.

San Francisco State University is pretty big on its College of Ethnic Studies…err, at least the Ethnic Studies Department is pretty big on Ethnic Studies. Everyone else seems to be on that Eurocentric canon tip. However, we here at the College of Ethnic Studies make things happen. One of which is the Garden of Remembrance, a peaceful space commemorating Japanese Internment during World War II.

An improvised photo shoot I did with Maureen in my backyard. Where would we be without fun construction sites in the middle of a mother’s garden?

Rocky somehow got his hands on some studio lights. We took a quick trip to a nearby Home Depot in search of some cool props. We decided that gas masks are gangster. Orikai decided to chill out with us that afternoon too. What up, dog?

By far one of the dopest concerts I’ve been to. It was sponsored by Bayan USA in an effort to both fund raise as well as raise awareness of the political turmoil found in the Philippines. Get those mutha fuckin’ hands up!

Candids of two very influential homies. I caught the shot of Jared when I was on my way to move my car around the side streets surrounding San Francisco State University. We ran into each other while he was on his way to class. Ed’s shot was taken at a PACE general meeting. He was still the Head Coordinator of the organization at the time.

We used to kill time and sharpen lowlight skills down at San Francisco’s Embarcadero. For all of 2007 I was using a point and shoot super-zoom, the Canon S3 IS. I’m always intrigued by the shapes and lights of night-time Embarcadero Center.

One of the earlier shoots I did back in 07. Kammy and Winnie are both dear friends of mine. Always down for a shoot, the cousins asked me “what do you have in mind for this one?” I guess I felt like doing something more intimate. The set has received a few raised eyebrows, but I think it was done in good taste.
